Today was Henry’s first day of preschool!
We enrolled him in a Montessori preschool over the summer, and today was his first day. He is currently only going for half days, but it is 5 days a week. I’m really excited about this preschool. I’m heard nothing but great things about it and I think that Henry is going to get a great education there.
Our current plan is for him to be in the Montessori program through Kindergarten, and then for 1st grade, we’ll enroll him in a public school (he’ll more than likely go to the one that is across the street from J’s work).
There are some funny things about this school though. The major thing is that Henry isn’t allowed any items with popular media characters on it. That includes: clothing, backpacks, lunchboxes and anything else they bring from home. I understand the reason behind it, but at the same time it’s a little frustrating because 90% of Henry’s wardrobe has popular media characters on it. So, we’ve got to shopping this weekend for some new shirts….
Also, do you have any idea how hard it is to find a lunchbox with a thermos for a child that DOESN’T have a character on it?? It is impossible, unless you want to spend upwards of $30 on a child’s lunchbox, which I do not. Henry has a plain gray lunchbox and a rubbermade thermos…..it was so hard to purchase that when we saw all the really cool batman ones online.
This school also forces us to volunteer for them. If we don’t, then we get fined. Each family has to volunteer somewhere around 20 hours a year. I feel like a jackass complaining about volunteer work, but at the same time, my husband and I work full time jobs. How am I supposed to volunteer for them and not have to take time off of work to do it? It’s a great thing that my mom has said she’ll do most of the volunteer work, but what are other parents who work full time jobs supposed to do?
Overall I’m excited about his school. We’ve got some kinks to work out, but I still think that Henry will really benefit from being in that environment.
